All Rules,

Section I - Spam / Flood

  1. Channels
  2. Flooding channels with excessive amounts of spam is not allowed at any time on any TechToKnow IRC servers. This is because it causes a huge amount of load on the servers that slows down the network Services (BotServ, ChanServ, etc.) Flood of any channel can and will end with network bans if you do not cease instantly.
  3. Private Message
  4. You can use the server's silence feature for the odd spammer (/silence +nick/hostmask). To get the hostmask must do a /whois nick. Should you get attacked by a botnet (explained later), it is probably advisable that you use usermode +R. This will prevent any unidentified users Personal Messaging you, and botnets tend to be a line of unidentified nicks. Should this get excessive, you may wish to contact a network operator/administrator. These users can be found by typing /ircops.
  5. Bots
  6. The use of bots will be explained later. This part is to explain flooding of bots. On networks you will always find bots made by people, made with mIRC scripting or some other form. Inviting a large number of bots to a channel with intentions to spam the bot commands in attempt to either give the bot serious lag time (delay to as and when the bot returns the information after a given command) or bring it offline completely will under no circumstances be tolerated.
  7. Websites, Links and URLs
  8. Spamming links in a channel or multiple channels is forbidden. You are permitted to give links to friends or channels you occupy. However, excessive spam of the link(s) is not allowed at any time. Malicious URLs are not to be given at any time. These are links are those which contain programs that will cause any sort of harm to a computer. Whether it is a keylogger/virus, spyware, malware or any other sort of harmful software, it will be considered malicious and will result in a network wide ban.
  9. Servers
  10. We allow advertisement of servers within appropriate context, as long it isn't considered spam under our rules. You may also include a server name within a topic, so long as it is also within appropriate context. Spamming the network within channels or PM to anyone, mass inviting people to a channel and then telling them to leaveTechToKnow IRC for the new network, etc is strictly prohibited.

Section II - Nicknames

  1. Nickname claims
  2. Nicknames are the owned by the person to register them. They have the right to put protection on it, drop it, and give it away, whatever. A second user who did not register it at first has no claim to it.
After six days of the owner not identifying under a nickname for 21 days (3 weeks), it is automatically dropped by the server. As and when this happens, the owner loses all claims to the nick, and they are free to re-register it, or another user is entitled to register it as their own. If there is a very suitable reason why a name should never drop, IRC operators can prevent the nickname from dropping automatically. Please do not register nicknames if you have no intention of using them. IRC operators will not approve of registering nicknames for the sheer sake of it, or to prevent any user from using it. IRC operators also reserve the right to forbid the use of a nickname for any or no reason.
  3. Unauthorised use
  4. Unauthorised use of any nickname, whether it was because they forgot to include a '/' before identification commands or any other means, you must not ghost them, recover the nick, or even go onto the nick and physically "steal" it. Should your nickname get stolen at any time you must contact an IRC operator as soon as you can, in order to ensure the recovery of a nickname.

Section III - Channel Use

  1. Ownership
  2. As with nickname ownership, channels belong to the person who registered it. This is viewed by typing /chanserv info #channel. the nickname that is shown under "Founder:" is the user with overall access to the channel, and it the owner of it. They lose all claim to that network should the channel be dropped, given away, or automatically (which happens after 14 days (2 weeks) of it being unused by any user on the channel access list)

  3. Stealing
  4. Should you find out the password to the channel, it is forbidden to use that password to your advantage. Stealing a channel, changing the password etc is not allowed in any way. Should your channel get maliciously stolen, you must contact an IRC operator as soon as you can in order to retrieve it.

  5. Bans
  6. Channel operators and half operators have the power to kick(ban) from channels. Should you get banned from a channel, and you do not have the access level to remove the ban, you must not use any method to regain access to the channel.

    This includes:
    • Resetting your modem/router on a dynamic IP in order to gain a new hostmask
    • Using an open/closed proxy
    • Using a BNC (IRC Bouncer)

Using any of these in order to regain access to the channel can result in network wide bans.

Section IV - Network Bans

  1. Automatic Bans
  2. Sometimes our network services will give timed auto-kills. These can be given for several reasons:
    • Session Limit (Default is three connections per IP Address)
    • Open Proxies (Our proxy scanner will scan you for these, if you have one, chances are it is a virus)
    • SpamFilter. Some blocks of text will be blocked if the IRC operators have set this. Serious blocks of text, like malicious URLs may place an automatic akill.
Should these be given, they are generally timed. If they are not, they will include information how to get them removed.
  3. Wide Bans
  4. Sometimes someone or a group of people insist in causing a number of huge problems for the network. If these users use an Internet Service Providor that is not highly popular on the network, we may place an akill upon the entire ISP. This would cause anyone with that ISP to be banned from the network. However: We can place exceptions for the innocent.
  5. Specific Bans
  6. Should a user earn themselves an auto-kill, then we will remove them from the network with an auto-kill. This can be given if they are a threat to the network users, or if we decide they should not be on the network. This will not affect any other user than the one we aim it at.
  7. Appealing Bans
  8. All users removed from the network will be entitled to appeal the ban. This may or may not be accepted, but we will not accept reasons such as "My brother did it", or supposedly getting their parents to say that their child did not break any rules. What you cannot prove, cannot be appealed. The best way is to be unbanned is to admit it, be honest, and post your reasoning.
  9. BNCs / Bouncers
  10. A BNC is a piece of software that keeps a connection open from the nickname host, and the IRC Server/network. It keeps your presence within the network, and allows you to log all personal messages which you can view when you get back online. When using a BNC you get something called an equivalent to a vhost. This can be changed very easily to one of the other available ones (provided by the BNC provider), and with that it is possible to evade channel and network bans. You must not do this. Evading bans with this method will have serious consequences, and we will not look kindly upon any ban evasion. If you are a BNC shell provider, you will need session limit exceptions. Feel free to contact an IRC operator to have this arranged.

Section V - Bots

  1. Bot Policy
  2. Many people script bots with mIRC. These scripts and bots are by all means allowed. However: Malicious bots such as DDoS bots are not allowed in anyway. These bots are designed to cause huge problems for the network and the users. Same goes for trojan bots and botnets:
  3. Botnets
  4. These bots join channels in great numbers, change their nicks, hop spam and send mass amounts of irrelevant messages to the channel, and possibly the users within it. These bots will not be shown any sympathy, and will be removed as soon as possible, for large amounts of time. If you get attacked by one, it is suggested you put the channel on modes +MiKR, and put your nickname on mode +R. This should stop the majority of them, and you should then instantly contact an IRC operator to get them removed.
  5. Warez Bots
  6. Some bots have scripts that give out "serial keys" for unregistered projects. We will not allow these bots as it is breaking copyright policies. Having these bots and scripts will quite likely attract the attention of the IRC operators. Please do not use these scripts.

Section VI - TechToKnow IRC Rules

Conspiracies to macro, sell accounts, and any other breach to the TechToKnow IRC rules will be taken into account and can result in warnings from IRC operators and even akills.

Access to TechToKnow IRC is a privilege, not a right!
